The announcement of Samsung’s Galaxy Fold has not yet closed for a week and we already have a thinner, bigger screen and flatter level. Huawei Mate X has just been announced at the MWC 2019 with 8-inch OLED screen, 11mm thick, 5G ultra-spec, 4.500mAh battery, and Huawei’s Kirin 980 processor.

When the device is folded, you have essentially a dual-screen smartphone with the second screen on the back allowing you to take selfies with the main camera or share the content of your main screen with one person on the other side. Open Mate X and you have a nearly square tablet with fewer bezels on three sides. One of the sides is intended as a thick grip section that houses all the cameras. The thickness of the main frame is impressively thin at 5.4mm !!! Even when folded, Mate X is only 11 mm thick, thanks largely to the fact that it does not have a gap in its fold. This is the advantage of folding a screen outward rather than inward. Unfortunately this leaves the screen all exposed out.

When it’s open, Mate X offers an 8-inch screen and when turned it turns into a 6.6-inch smartphone.

  • 6.6-inch (19.5: 9 aspect ratio, 2480 x 1148 resolution) main screen when folded.
  • 6.4-inch (25: 9, 2480 x 892) rear screen when folded.
  • 8-inch (8: 7.1, 2480 x 2200) main display when open.

The processor is Huawei’s Kirin 980 together with Huawei’s Balong 5000 5G modem for 5G connection. It has a dual SIM slot or you can add one of Huawei’s Nano memory cards. There is a large 4.500mAh battery in the new Huawei device, but we do not know if it turns out to be day-to-day. It is accompanied by an upgraded version of the SuperCharge 55W supercharging technology, which will charge Mate X at 85% in 30 minutes. The side activation button also acts as a fingerprint sensor.

The mobile was given to the public and everyone was surprised by the lack of bulges or gaps between the two screens. The screen unfolds completely at 180 degrees. Huawei proudly presented her hinge, giving it the title of Falcon Wing. The engineers of the company have been working for the mobile phone for three years, according to consumer group chief Richard Yu, while the design has more than 100 components and is patented.

Huawei billed Mate X at € 2,299 with 8GB of RAM and 512GB. It will be released in the middle of this year.
