Huawei presented its new flags in London, Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro. The company is investing a lot in R & D, with 15% of its revenue coming out there, while only 2298 patents were deposited in Europe in 2017. By the end of 2018, it is expected to have invested more than a billion dollars in research because of its forecasts, that 90% of consumers will enjoy “smart” services by 2025.
At the phones now, we have a unique design on the back that makes them stand out from the rest with one eye. The three cameras and the flash are in square, while the corners of the square are the same as those of the chassis, with Huawei wanting to achieve simplicity and symmetry in design. The Mate 20 Pro comes with a 6.39-inch OLED display, 19K: 9 HDR resolution 2K +, while the Mate 20 features a 6.53-inch screen with FHD + resolution, 18.7: 9 and a much smaller notch that Huawei calls Dowdrop notch. Available colors are Pink gold, Midnight Blue, Emerald Green, Twilight and Black.
Huawei Mate 20 has a slightly bigger 6.53″ screen and its most secure biometric unlocking method is the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. It has a large 4,000 mAh battery that supports 22.5W SuperCharge.
Midnight Blue and Emerald Green come with a new design on the back called the Hyper Optical Pattern and are basically streaking like those we find on vinyl records. With this design, Huawei promises better grip and more resistance to the fingers. The Mate 20 Pro comes with IP68, 6GB RAM and 128GB of storage, and the Mate 20 comes with IP53, 4GB RAM and 128GB of storage space.
Huawei is particularly proud of its processor, the powerful Kirin 980, which is also the first commercially available 7nm processor. The eight-core processor consists of 2 processors clocked at 2.6GHz, 4 at 1.8GHz and the company’s “secret weapon”, two NPUs (neural processing unit) capable of identifying 4500 images per minute. One NPU takes on traditional A.I. tasks such as recognition of an object while the other takes on more complex processes, such as understanding natural language or editing video in real-time. So the phone promises 175% performance gain and 40% better battery management. The connectivity achieves 1.4Gbps download speeds at LTE and 1.732Gbps on Wi-Fi.
The battery is yet another powerful new line of paper, with Mate 20 Pro coming with 4200mAh and Mate 20 with 4000mAh. Huawei also took care of certification of battery safety by the German TUV. The Mate 20 Pro comes with 40W Supercharge technology that allows a 30-minute charge to fill the battery at 70%. At the same time Mate 20 reaches 58%.
Now we also have 15W wireless fast charging. Here Huawei innovates, with so-called wireless reverse chargeing. Basically, you can now charge phones that support the Qi protocol simply by touching them on the back of Mate. Charging rates vary according to the charging model.
Huawei now prefers the camera of youngsters to call it “a lens that thinks” since here too the A.I. plays an important role. At Mate 20 Pro we have a 40MP wide angle lens with f / 1.8, a telephoto in 8MP with f / 2.4 and OIS, and for the first time we also see an ultra wide angle 20MP f / 2.2 lens. In Mate 20 the corresponding numbers are 20, 8 and 16MP. The ultra wide lens also helps in macro photography. Usually in mobile phones we can approach up to 8-9cm before the object starts blurring. But here we can get close to 2.5cm.
Master AI 2.0 can recognize over 1500 different scenes and suitably adjust the camera while it is also used to maintain focus on the subject. The AI Cinema mode offers cinematic cinematography with a 21: 9 aspect ratio, while various video filters are applied in real-time. It also recognizes faces in a video and can offer small 10-second clips that focus on this face.
In the field of security at Mate 20 Pro we have 3D deep sensing technology with 3D Facial Unlock. The front 24MP (f / 2.0) lens along with other sensors accurately reads the face, unlocking the phone quickly. However, there is a fingerprint sensor embedded beneath the screen surface. Huawei also offers Password Vault, saving all your password and offering autofill using your biometric features.
In the software we have Huawei’s EMUI 9 on Android Pie. EMUI 9 has been simplified and has removed 10% of the settings data. The speed of tapping, opening and using applications has improved. PC projection makes desktop mode wireless for all monitors that support Miracast, while the phone can connect to WiFi or Bluetooth printers. Performance Mode stands for demanding and gaming situations. The Mate 20 Pro will come in as dual SIM or with a SIM and slot for a new kind of memory card, which is in the shape of a nanoSim.
